Run over the long 2500 metres distance at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse on Oaks Day, or Ladies Day as it has become commonly known among the fashionistas, is traditionally held on the third day (Thursday) of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
In a history running parallel to the prestigious Melbourne Cup, the VRC Oaks was first run way back in 1861. The Oaks was originally run over the imperial 12 furlong distance, before being extended to the current 2500 metre distance in 1973. Prizemoney for the event has been raised the a very healthy $1 million for the 2019 version of the race.
