Melbourne Demons: The Demons were the best side throughout much of 2021, and were rewarded with an emphatic and drought-breaking Premiership victory at the end of it. This year they maintain all the same pieces that made them so hard to play against last year, and with the prospect of winning it this year in front of their home fans rather than Perth an added incentive, they are deserved flag favourites.
Western Bulldogs: Halfway through the third quarter of the Grand Final last year it looked like the Dogs were on track for a second Premiership in five years, but they wilted in extraordinary fashion thereafter. Their midfield is arguably the best and almost certainly the deepest in the comp, and they will be eager to atone for their poor performance in that last quarter and a half of last season.
Brisbane Lions: It was déjà vu for the Lions last season, failing to capitalise on a top four finish in what is becoming an increasingly frustrating period for them. They have the talent to go deep into September, but fulfilling that potential is something they’ve struggled with. Nonetheless, with many of their best players now entering what are typically the peaks of an AFL career, they will be a dangerous team this year.
Port Adelaide: Port are another team struggling to take that final step, but given their continual presence at the top of the ladder over the past couple of years they have to be considered a chance. They have a forward line with the potential to be the best in the business, and if they can get the ball in there enough this year they will once again be in the mix.
Geelong Cats: The criticism of the Cats heading into this season, as it was last year, remains their age, but there’s no denying the quality of their list, regardless of how many players in their 30s they might have. Geelong have been perennial Preliminary Final participants for many years; can they finally buck the trend which has prevented them from adding to their three flags this century?

It’s hard to trust St. Kilda even with beating the worst of teams, but there’s no denying that on their day they are really tough to play. Last season was a massive step back after an impressive 2020, but progress isn’t always linear and they will be hoping that in time, that season will prove to be a mere blip on the radar. Paying $23, they’re not even a certainty to make the finals, but they are perhaps the team with the biggest gap between their ceiling and their floor, which makes them an outsider with at least a chance of causing a surprise.
