Round 10 of the AFL season will see the league Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders culture and contribution to the game, and will be headlined by the annual Dreamtime at the ‘G matchup between the Tigers and Bombers on Saturday night. That one doesn’t exactly look like the match of the round unfortunately, with the Bombers really struggling and the Tigers hitting some great form, but there are plenty of good games to keep us entertained elsewhere. It begins with a big one between the Blues and Swans on Friday night, while the next day the Cats and the Power lock horns in another intriguing clash. Check out our previews and predictions for all nine games below.
Carlton Blues vs Sydney Swans May 20 – Marvel Stadium, Melbourne – 7.50pm Round 10 begins with a huge game this Friday night when the Blues welcome the Swans to Marvel Stadium in a game which could have major implications for the top four later in the season. These two sides are currently sitting in fourth and fifth, with Carlton hanging on to their spot in the top four courtesy of a 30-point win over the Giants last weekend. In their first game without one member of their two-headed forward monster in Harry McKay, they jumped out of the blocks before keeping GWS at bay to take their record to 7-2. Meanwhile, the Swans bounced back from a couple of losses in a row to demolish the Bombers to the tune of 58 points. This looks like being a really tight game, but with question marks still hanging over the Blues’ proverbial head with regards to their ability to play at their best against quality teams, the Swans might prove a little too good. Bet on the Swans to win @ $1.94 (Palmerbet) Geelong Cats vs Port Adelaide Power May 21 – GMHBA Stadium, Geelong – 1.45pm In a game of potentially significant consequence last weekend, the Cats endured a tough loss to swallow when going down by ten points to the Saints. The game exposed their frailty against quality big men, but they’ll be happy to be returning home to Geelong where they play substantially better this weekend. They won’t have it all their own way, though; the Power have now won four in a row after losing their first five, and although their most recent win only came against the struggling Kangaroos, they were emphatic in the 69-point. They are now playing the kind of footy which we have become accustomed to seeing from them in recent years and have got themselves back in the finals hunt as a result. They can cause Geelong plenty of headaches this weekend, but with their parochial fanbase behind them the Cats can get back on the winners’ list. Bet on the Cats to win @ $1.37 (Unibet) Western Bulldogs vs Gold Coast Suns May 21 – Mars Stadium, Ballarat – 1.45pm Footy returns to Ballarat on Saturday afternoon in an important game between two sides trying to force their way into the top eight. The Dogs have struggled to consistently find their best this year, and though they did look good against the Pies last Friday night, their main issue at the moment is putting together that sort of form in consecutive weeks. They’ll be deserved favourites against the Suns, but Gold Coast have hit some pretty good form of their own and won’t go down easy. Their win against Fremantle on the weekend was one with plenty of merit, and suggested they may finally be turning the corner after coach Stewy Dew’s job was hanging by a thread just a couple of weeks ago. They’ll give plenty of cheek in this one, but the Doggies might just prove too strong and finally put together consecutive wins. Bet on the Bulldogs to win @ $1.43 (BoomBet) North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Melbourne Demons May 21 – Marvel Stadium, Melbourne – 4.35pm It’s been a nice couple of weeks for the Demons. After winning their first eight games, last week they faced a physically and mentally depleted Eagles team and duly disposed of them, while this week they’ll face the only side capable of competing with West Coast as the worst in the league. The Kangaroos have been so disappointing this year, and last weekend suffered yet another humiliating loss to sink to 1-8 with a woeful percentage of just 53.7%. They desperately need to find a way just to be competitive, but the Demons aren’t exactly the ideal team to come up against for a team trying to play themselves back into form. Melbourne won’t need to get out of second gear to win this and probably won’t, but they should be far too strong regardless. Bet on the Demons to win @ $1.01 (Bet365)
Adelaide Crows vs St. Kilda Saints May 21 – Adelaide Oval, Adelaide – 7.30pm After a strong start to the year, the Crows have had a tough three weeks, losing all three games relatively comfortable to fall to 3-6. Their performance last weekend was, at least, slightly improved, and a six goal loss to the Lions is nothing to be ashamed of, but they will be eager to get back on the winners’ list ASAP. It won’t be easy this weekend, however, against a St. Kilda side coming off a great win. They put a halt to a two-game losing slide with an impressive win against the Cats, and can keep the ball rolling and remain in touch with the top four with another win against the Crows on Saturday night. Bet on the Saints to win @ $1.36 (PlayUp) Richmond Tigers vs Essendon Bombers May 21 – MCG, Melbourne – 7.30pm A few short weeks ago, it looked like the Tigers’ best hope for the season was to sneak into the top eight and perhaps win a final, but their wave of momentum is growing week by week and all of a sudden they are beginning to look a little more dangerous than previously expected. The three-time Premiership winners notched their third win in a row last weekend, and while it wasn’t their most comprehensive performance they did what they needed to against the Hawks. Not so the Bombers. After their rousing come-from-behind win a fortnight ago – also against the Hawks – they barely fired a shot last weekend against the Swans. This year, which has started out in nightmarish fashion, has quickly slipped away from Essendon, and it’s not likely to get any better against a red-hot Richmond at the annual Dreamtime at the ‘G match this weekend. Bet on the Tigers to win @ $1.29 (BoomBet) GWS Giants vs West Coast Eagles May 22 – GIANTS Stadium, Sydney – 2.10pm Leon Cameron’s last match didn’t go to plan for the Giants last weekend, with his side slow out of the blocks and ultimately unable to match it with the Blues in the farewell game for their nine-year coach. Mark McVeigh will take the reins for the rest of the season, and gets what should be an easy start for his new team. Having said that, there’s little to gain other than a lot of percentage for sides playing the Eagles at the moment: win comfortably and it’s the expected result; lose and it’s a complete disaster. So hapless are West Coast, however, that even the struggling Giants shouldn’t have too many issues disposing of them on Sunday afternoon. Bet on the Giants to win @ $1.10 (Unibet) Hawthorn Hawks vs Brisbane Lions May 22 – University of Tasmania Stadium, Launceston – 3.20pm After a positive start to the season the Hawks have now lost four in a row, the latest a 23-point loss to the Tigers last Saturday. They had their moments in that game and showed plenty of good signs, but unfortunately it doesn’t get much easier for them this weekend. Tasmania is typically a happy hunting ground for Hawthorn, but that probably won’t be enough to see them compete with the Lions. Brisbane have been terrific all year, winning eight of their first nine games and emerging as the most likely competitor to Melbourne at the top of the table, and they should be able to notch up another four points in Launceston on Sunday. Bet on the Lions to win @ $1.30 (Palmerbet) Fremantle Dockers vs Collingwood Magpies May 22 – Optus Stadium, Perth – 5.20pm In what has been a brilliant start to the season for the Dockers, they put in their first subpar performance of the year last weekend, booting just four goals in a surprise 36-point loss against the Suns. Only time will tell whether that loss was just a blip on the radar, but instinct suggests that it most likely was. They’ll return to Perth this weekend, where they’ll welcome a Magpies side coming off back-to-back losses. Collingwood has been competitive so far this year but struggled last weekend against the Doggies, and despite their improvement are clearly still a long way behind the top sides in their development. This game offers the Dockers a nice chance to jump straight back onto the winners’ list and maintain their hold on a spot in the top four. Bet on the Dockers to win @ $1.26 (PlayUp)
