September 18th at 7.50pm – Gabba, Brisbane A month ago the Saints were in with a chance at a surprise top four finish, but three losses in their past four games have sent them spiralling to seventh place. They are a game and percentage ahead of both Melbourne and the Giants, but a significant loss and a comfortable win to the Demons (who play the Bombers) could still see them miss out on the eight. It’s unlikely, but they’ll be eager to knock the possibility on the head with a win to ensure their place in the finals. The Giants have it all ahead of them after a season full of disappointment. Last year’s Grand Finalists, they were expected to challenge again but instead find themselves in an unenviable position with just a week to go in the regular season. It’s unlikely they can catch the Saints even with a big win here, but if they manage a win and both the Demons and the Bulldogs lose they could still sneak in, so they should have plenty of motivation.
It’s tipped to be close by the betting sites but we think the Saints will be too good. St. Kilda to win by 1-39 at $2.05 The Giants have been so disappointing this year that it’s hard to see them winning this, but the Saints won’t blow them out. St. Kilda -5.5 at $1.91 As above, St. Kilda should be too strong. St. Kilda / St. Kilda half time / full time leader at $2.15 There’s good value for the Saints to lead at the main break as well as full time.
Head to Head Record Played 10 GWS has won 5 St. Kilda has won 4 One draw Last time they met Round 7, 2019 – GWS 18.6 (114) defeated St. Kilda 10.10 (70) General Statistics The Saints have won just one of their last seven against GWS. Giants’ spearhead Jeremy Cameron kicked six goals the last time these two sides met. Jack Steele has had a potentially All-Australian level year for the Saints – he is second in the AFL in clearances, third in pressure acts, and eighth in contested possessions.
There’s plenty on the line in this game, with both sides competing for the last two spots in the top eight in the last round of the season. The Saints, however, are in a far better position, and if they can earn a win here – or even avoid a big loss – they are all but assured a spot in the finals. GWS needs plenty to go their way to sneak in, but that all starts with a victory of their own and given the way they have played for much of this year it’s very difficult to back them to pull that off. Bet on the Saints now
