September 18th at 7.50pm – Gabba, Brisbane
A month ago the Saints were in with a chance at a surprise top four finish, but three losses in their past four games have sent them spiralling to seventh place. They are a game and percentage ahead of both Melbourne and the Giants, but a significant loss and a comfortable win to the Demons (who play the Bombers) could still see them miss out on the eight. It’s unlikely, but they’ll be eager to knock the possibility on the head with a win to ensure their place in the finals.
The Giants have it all ahead of them after a season full of disappointment. Last year’s Grand Finalists, they were expected to challenge again but instead find themselves in an unenviable position with just a week to go in the regular season. It’s unlikely they can catch the Saints even with a big win here, but if they manage a win and both the Demons and the Bulldogs lose they could still sneak in, so they should have plenty of motivation.
