September 12th at 7.10pm – Suncorp Stadium, Queensland The 2020 Super Rugby AU Qualifying Final is, as expected, a clash between the Reds and the Rebels, with the Brumbies waiting for the winner in the Grand Final next weekend. However, there will be plenty who are surprised at how they got there. Both were viewed as relatively equal challengers to the Brumbies, but while the Reds have continually furthered their standing in the league the Rebels have run into plenty of struggles in recent weeks. They won their last three games by an average of 29 points, with two of those wins coming against the Rebels and the Brumbies in dominant fashion. As a result they finished just three points shy of the Brumbies, while the Rebels were six points back in third. They had to beat the Force last week to make it and only barely managed to do that, lifting themselves into the finals series by the barest of margins. Now they’ve made it and anything can happen, but they’ll head in as significant underdogs against the in-form Reds.
Reds are pretty comfortable favourites, and though they should win it wouldn’t surprise to see defence tighten up in this one. Reds to win by 1-12 at $2.50 The Reds should be too strong but with so much on the line expect the Rebels’ defence to knuckle down and keep it close. Reds / Reds half time / full time leader at $1.70 The Reds are solid value to lead at the break and the game’s end. Reds score first and win at $2.05 At more than even money this is worth an outlay.
Head to Head Record Played 19 Reds have won 11 Rebels have won 7 One draw Last time they met Round 7, 2020 – Reds 19-3 Rebels General Statistics Quade Cooper is a distant memory for these teams, but he has an interesting record in these clashes – he leads the Reds in total points against the Rebels, and is also seventh for the Rebels in total points against the Reds. Back to 2020 – Filipo Daugunu has been terrific for the Reds, leading the league in both tries (5), carries (94), and defenders beaten (29), while he is also second in clean breaks (12) The Reds were the highest scoring team in Super Rugby AU this year.
Though few would be surprised to see these two teams set to go at it in this year’s Qualifying Final, plenty would be surprised at how short the Reds are in the betting odds. However, they well and truly deserve it after a terrific few weeks, and while they have been thriving the Rebels only just limped into the finals. They could only manage to get over the line against the Force with their season on the line by four points last week, and if they can’t improve significantly on that effort – and their efforts for a number of weeks – the Reds will be far too strong. Bet on the Reds now
