Super Smash Predictions – Swashbuckling Kiwi T20 Cricket

The 17th season of the T20 franchise cricket from New Zealand is here and we expect to see exciting cricket from the Southern Hemisphere. Though the Super Smash might lack the star power of the Indian Premier League or the Big Bash League with which it would once again coincide, the tournament is highly competitive. Though it doesn’t involve overseas players like other tournaments, the second oldest T20 franchise tournament after the T20 Blast has produced generations of T20 stars for New Zealand cricket.

Who will win Super Smash 2021-22?

Super Smash has been one of the most competitive T20 leagues in the world and perhaps the only T20 league where all the participating teams have won the title at least once. Hence, picking a winner in this tournament is never easy. Here we look back at the performances of the six sides over the last few seasons to offer you insights into what’s in store for the 2021-22 edition of the tournament.

# Wellington Firebirds

The reigning champions have won the last two editions of the tournament and share the honours of being the most successful team along with the Auckland Aces. It was a dominant show by the side last season where they lost only once in the league games. The side draws its strengths from a bunch of players who have played well together. Michael Bracewell would be aiming for the third consecutive title win and becoming the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

# Canterbury Kings

Since their win in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2005/06, the Kings haven’t added another jewel to the crown. They came close last year but fell one step short of victory losing the final. It was quite a turnaround for the side having been on the sidelines for the previous few editions. Cole McConchie would like to better the performance from last year and aim at their second title win this season.

# Auckland Aces

They have won the title four times in 2006/07, 2010/11, 2011/12, and 2015/16. However, it hasn’t been the greatest of runs for the side since then. It was a poor show by the side in the last edition where they managed only two wins in their 10 games. The side led by Robert O’Donnell has some of the best hitters of the ball in Kiwi cricket and the skipper would like to leverage this and earn their 5th title.

# Central Stags

The Stags did well in the league stages in the last edition to finish second but couldn’t carry that form into the knockouts. They have won the title thrice – 2007/08, 2009/10, and the last one in 2018/19. The side led by the energetic Tom Bruce would like to set the ball rolling from the start of the season. They have a young bunch of players and shall aim to do well this season.

# Northern Knights

They have won the title twice in the past in 2013/14 and 2017/18 but the side has been struggling ever since. The side has done relatively well in the league stages over the last few seasons, but it is in the knockouts that they have failed. They finished 4th on the points table last year and skipper Anton Devcich would like to improve on that. There is good talent in the side, and they would like to go the distance.

# Otago Volts

It was a dismal performance by the Volts last season where they finished at the bottom of the points table with just two wins to talk about. The side had earlier won the titles in 2008/09 and 2012/13 but has been on a losing streak since then. Skipper Jacob Duffy would like to see a good start this season as this has been an endemic problem for the side in the last few editions.
